How to forward ports in Windows

Port forwarding is a technique used to redirect network traffic from one IP address and port number combination to another. It is commonly used to allow external devices or services to access resources hosted on a private network. While port forwarding is more commonly associated with routers and firewalls, it is also possible to perform port forwarding on a Windows machine.

In the Windows environment, port forwarding can be achieved by configuring the built-in Windows Firewall or by using third-party software. The Windows Firewall allows you to create inbound and outbound rules to control network traffic. By creating a specific rule, you can forward incoming traffic from a specific port to a different IP address and port.

Examples:

  1. Forwarding a port using Windows Firewall:

    • Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
    • Type "wf.msc" and press Enter to open the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.
    • In the left pane, click on "Inbound Rules" or "Outbound Rules" depending on the direction of the traffic you want to forward.
    • Click on "New Rule" in the right pane to open the New Inbound Rule Wizard or New Outbound Rule Wizard.
    • Select the rule type (Port, Program, etc.) and follow the wizard to specify the port and IP address to forward the traffic to.
  2. Forwarding a port using third-party software:

    • Download and install a port forwarding software such as "Simple Port Forwarding" or "Port Forwarding Wizard".
    • Launch the software and click on the "Add" or "Create" button to create a new port forwarding rule.
    • Specify the local IP address and port, as well as the destination IP address and port.
    • Save the rule and enable it to start forwarding the traffic.
